juried fiction award in the U.S. |

established in 1917 with an endowment from Joseph Pulitzer, an American newspaper publisher, to Columbia University.
The award recognizes significant achievements in journalism, letters, drama, and music. Prizes are awarded in the
categories of fiction, general nonfiction, history, poetry, and biography/autobiography. |

The John Newbery Medal [see previous winners] The Newbery Medal was first offered in
1921 and is named for 18th century British bookseller John Newbery. The award is donated annually by the Melcher family
and awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The award
was established as an incentive for better quality in children’s books and is awarded to the author of the most
distinguished contribution to American literature for children published during the preceding year. |
