Booker Prize for Fiction   [see previous winners and nominees]
The Man Booker Prize is a prestigious literature award started in 1969 and administered by the National Book League in the United Kingdom. The award is given to the best novel written in English by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the British Commonwealth, Eire, Pakistan, or South Africa. Judges are selected from the country's finest critics, writers, and academics.
 
National Book Awards   [see previous winners]
Given by the National Book Foundation as part of their efforts to promote reading and to raise funds for literacy programs. A tradition since 1950, the award recognizes achievement in four genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature.
 
National Book Critics Circle Awards   [see previous winners and nominees]
Award given by the National Book Critics Circle, a group consisting of nearly 700 book reviewers, for the finest books published in English. The award is given in five categories: fiction, general nonfiction, biography/autobiography, poetry, and criticism.
 
PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction   [see previous winners]
The PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction is named for William Faulkner and is affiliated with PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists, and Novelists), the international writer's organization. The award was established in 1980 by writers to honor their peers and is the largest juried fiction award in the U.S.
 
The Pulitzer Prize   [see previous winners]
This prestigious award was established in 1917 with an endowment from Joseph Pulitzer, an American newspaper publisher, to Columbia University. The award recognizes significant achievements in journalism, letters, drama, and music. Prizes are awarded in the categories of fiction, general nonfiction, history, poetry, and biography/autobiography.
 
The John Newbery Medal   [see previous winners]
The Newbery Medal was first offered in 1921 and is named for 18th century British bookseller John Newbery. The award is donated annually by the Melcher family and awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. The award was established as an incentive for better quality in children’s books and is awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published during the preceding year.
